A DOCUMENTARY EVENT
(60 MINUTES)
Lady In Waiting: Final Chapter
is a one-hour television event that will finally put to rest a nearly
century-old mystery of the world's greatest maritime disasters, the
sinking of the Empress Of Ireland off Quebec, Canada in 1914.

|
With more passengers lost
than the ill-fated Titanic, this CPR ocean liner collided with
a Norwegian coal freighter and sank in just 14 minutes, taking
1012 lives. Why the mystery? Because the ship went down in the
exact same spot where its captain, Henry Kendall, had captured
the notorious North London Cellar Murderer Dr. Harvey Hawley Crippen
four years earlier.
|
Before his hanging, Crippen dramatically cursed
Kendall under an ominous fog, damning the captain to suffer for his
treachery. The curse of a condemned man went unheeded until a killer
fog arose on a night in May 1914 and the unthinkable happened —
the Empress sank with some 800 souls trapped in her bosom, with hundreds
more dying above her.
The greatest tragedy in Canadian maritime history
remains unsolved. Henry Kendall walked away a free man; the sinking
deemed an accident by an international inquiry. Yet many disbelieved
the captain’s testimony that he stopped the engines when he knew
a collision was inevitable. What if the ship’s telegraph was set
at Full Steam Ahead? That would tell a very different story, that perhaps
the captain was driven to disaster by Crippen’s curse.
The answer lies deep beneath the St. Lawrence
River where a structure the size of a 60-story building lies precariously
on its side.
|
This documentary event
will follow a world-class dive team as they attempt to go where
no one has ever gone before, deep into the bowels of the Empress
Of Ireland to locate the engine room telegraph. To accomplish this
dangerous feat they must enter a diver’s hell, battling tumultuous
currents, blinding silt and harsh temperatures. And worse, they
must enter an unstable wreck that is constantly shifting position,
such that an entry through one opening does not guarantee an exit
out the same way. |
So tangible is the curse, that several divers
have already died attempting to penetrate the infamous wreck.
The 200-kg brass telegraph will show Kendall’s
final order from May 29, 1914. It is a rare piece of history and provides
this last chance for closure, for the Empress is deteriorating rapidly
and will soon be lost forever.
Lady In Waiting: Final Chapter
will document this historic dive while re-telling the dramatic story
of Crippen’s curse, the evasive Captain Kendall, and the events
leading up to that tragic night. The program will include exclusive,
never-before-broadcast footage of Grace Hanagan, the last living survivor
of the Empress sinking, with an enthralling first-person account of
that fateful evening in 1914.
A unique blend of history and mystery, Lady In
Waiting’s event-based content will have a new media component,
allowing an extensive interactive experience that allows viewers to
follow the program on their TV and computer at the same time using innovative
iLoveTV technology.
